A strong Tory riding. Flaherty almost won in 1990, took it with a majority in 1995 and has one of the strongest (and richest) campaigns in place. Whitby-Ajax is the heart of the 905, and anything but a total Tory collapse will keep Jim Flaherty in cabinet

Pretty sturdy east-GTA 905ish stuff (even if it swung with the trend in '87 and '90), and Flaherty's a rising star in Harris ranks. Incidentally, at 3rd place and 10 points behind the NDP he didn't quite "almost win" in '90. But no matter.

One of the biggest advantages that I see Jim Flaherty having is his close connection to the community. Mr. Flaherty has been involved in many local initiatives, such as saving the Lynde Marsh. He helped secure money for the marsh from the Marshes for Life project in the last budget. The fact that Sid Ryan wouldn't run against, thought detracting from the vote split, does shed light on the views of other parties on the expected outcome of the election in this riding.

Although I am either voting NDP or am spoiling my ballot, I think we're going to see a Liberal victory. jim flaherty is an absolute jerk with no connection to the community. During the dramatic climax of the whole Bill 160 screw over, flaherty refused to answer phone calls. He is an asshole who will not be re-elected. If he is, revolution.

Local candidates debate in Whitby tonight showed that Jim Flaherty is the only person to best represent Whitby-Ajax at Queens Park. Liberal candidate Aldo DiGiovanni was at best passionate and at worst flip and maniacal (constant distortion on his microphone when yelling). He did not seem to understand some issues and resorted to pandering to his supporters in the audience for cheering. Betty Ann Craig (NDP) was passionate about those core NDP hot buttons, but like DiGiovanni was unable to back up statements with facts, except to quote the Hampton line (6% top tax bracket clawback), and 500 new environmental officers many times over. Jim Flaherty, the incumbent and clearly more used to these forums, was clear on government policy if a little long winded. He was not above taking small shots at his opponents but was generally professional. I'm biased to be truthful, but even my wife agreed that Flaherty was the clear winner, with Craig a distant (although passionate with conviction) second, and DiGiovanni likely to only pick up votes from McGuinty supporters.
