Labour led by 4.6% in the 1999 Euro elections and 2.1% in the GLA election in 2000, two bad performances for the party. If the Conservatives couldn't win on either of those occasions they are unlikely to break through in 2001, despite the seat's status as a Tory held marginal from a 1975 by-election gain until sitting MP Peter Bottomley relocated to Worthing in 1997. |
