Streatham is now a safe Labour seat, although the Conservatives held it from its creation in 1918 until as recently as 1992. It is on the west side of the borough of Lambeth, now under New Labour control after a chaotic history in recent decades, stretching from the suburbs in as far as the Town Hall ward in central Brixton. Most middle-London seats like this have trended Labour and Streatham has a large black population both in Brixton and in the further-out suburbs. Labour has been ahead here in all recent contests and the Conservatives lost a lot of their remaining council seats in 1998. |
