I am not wholly certain about my prediction I hasten to add, but it is clear that the Liberal Democrats stand no chance - though there is the opportunity for tactical voting here. In local government elections the city council is under no overall control and levels of council seats remaining roughly constant. Labour's actions over the Amphitheatre was unpopular though it is doubtful it will have any long term effect. Whether the Conservative candidate will prove popular remains yet to be seen. Yet Chester is fairly prosperous, not a typical Labour constituency. I believe, in fact, it had never had a Labour MP before 1997. I am not sure though how the voters view Christine Russell; it is very possible that they may have considered her to have been a good MP. Labour stand a chance of re-election, the Tories stand a chance of recapturing Chester. Whatever happens, it will be a near run thing. |

At that margin, Chester'll continue to be clad in Labour half-timbering for the meanwhile--it may be prosperous, but it's fundamentally (if not exclusively) urban, which makes a difference, especially around these parts. |
