Labour did particularly badly in the Pennines in the local and European elections. It's difficult to tell whether there'll be another regional backlash, but if there is Gordon Prentice is well placed to weather the storm. Prentice's willingness to criticise the Government have given him a high profile, and has been prominent in efforts to ban fox hunting. It's also not clear where a challenge would come from - from the Tories who held the seat from 1983 to 1992? Or from the LibDems who have in the past controlled the local council under 'community politics' guru Tony Greaves? |
