Labour did horrifically badly in last year's local elections across the Pennine region (East Lancashire/West Yorkshire), and lost control here in Rossendale. Janet Anderson first won the seat in 1992, aided by the Tories' Poll Tax, which hit people very hard in an area with many terraced houses and generally low property values (and which had therefore paid relatively low rates). She only won by 120 that year, and her majority in 97 was smaller than in several first-time Labour seats. Janet Anderson is an energetic campaigner, and the expected comfortable Labour victory should carry her to safety here. Nevertheless it will be a close call. |
