A new seat created in 1997, to take account of population growth in Cheshire, and, taking territory from four different seats, it is very mixed. It contains council estates on the edge of the Liverpool overspill town of Runcorn with its giant chemical works and the former salt-mining town of Northwich, both of which are solid for Labour. However, there are also the much more mixed commuter towns of Frodsham and Helsby, and some lush Tory countryside. There are more people and more votes in the Labour leaning parts of the seat, which made it an attractive bet for Mike Hall, who had won next-door Warrington South by just 130 votes in 1992, and decided to stand here following the boundary change. |
