Strangely for a Nationalist seat this area produced one of the biggest NO votes in the 1997 devolution referendum, and voted against taxraising powers for the Parliament on the second question. Alastair Morgan was elected to Holyrood for the SNP in 1999, but at the same time I think the Tories won the 'second vote' here for the regional list proportional representation seats. The SNP win in 1997 may be a product of a tactical vote against the incumbent Tory cabinet minister Iain Lang, which may not be repeated now the Tories are no longer in power. Too close to call - could go Tory.

With all the problems of the Tories, I do not think they will be able to take this seat. People will vote for continuity and it will be a reconduction of the Scottish.

Unfortunately for them, the Conservatives have not found a way to pick up ground in Scotland since the last election. The Nats will hold this seat.
