Stirling was held from 1983 to 1997 by Michael Forsyth, the last Secretary of State for Scotland in the Conservative Government. The Tories didn't lose by a huge margin in 1997 but are unlikely to win it back in the near future. The 1999 Scottish Parliament election saw them slip to third place with their candidate Brian Monteith, one of the organisers of the hugely unsuccessful NO campaign in the 1997 devolution referendum. |
