The Western Isles, as I understand it, is the only political region in the UK with a Gaelic-speaking majority. This has nothing to do with the election, I suppose, but I thought that I might include a bit of trivia with my "easy Labour hold, someone has to say it" post. |

This seat was held from 1970 until his retirement in 1987 by Donald Stewart for the SNP - for a while the only Nationalist at Westminster. A lot of rural seats in the 'Celtic Fringe' have a tendency to cast personal votes for popular local candidates whatever the party. If the Labour MP here has won three times already he'll probably win again, though a pro-SNP swing may well be likely across Scotland as a whole. |

Gaelic heartland surely will go to SNP eventually now is as good a time as any. SNP will do well across rural seats. The polls dont agree with me tho' |

As has happenned before, there is no SNP surge at this election. This seat, like Ochil and Kilmarnock will only fall to the SNP when Blair finally loses it. Safe for Labour this time around. There is, of course, no correlation between speaking Gaelic and voting SNP. |
