If tactical voting is still to play a part this time, then the Tories ought to be slightly concerned about Dorset West, especially after the high-profile coverage given to Red Wedge creator Billy Bragg who, a true Red Labour type, made headlines when he announced he is going to vote tactically for the Lib Dems in Dorset West to oust Oliver Letwin. He has even set up a website, www.votedorset.net, which aims to get Labour and Lib Dem voters in South and West Dorset to vote tactically. The Lib Dems will be putting pressure on Labour voters here and with all this publicity, it's going to be just a little too close to call ... |

The incumbent Consevative MP is a very unpopular right winger, instrumental in the development of the poll tax, privatisation and has recently spoken out against environmental taxes which make him very unpopular with the voters of West Dorset. |

Yes, and Letwin made an absolute ass of himself over his "disappearance" after the £20 billion tax cut story. Not something likely to endear him to voters! |

Dorset returned an all-Conservative delegation in 1997, but upon a very delicate glass ceiling; while the borough seats of Bournemouth & Poole delivered (curiously enough) fairly solid margins, the five "county" seats consisted of four C-LD ultra- or near-ultra-marginals (biggest gap: 5.2% in Dorset N), and Dorset S, the tightest C-Lab marginal of them all! No wonder Dorset's gone into the 2001 race a more colourful electoral battleground than it's been for ages (it *would have* been in 1997, had the degree of Tory fall and LD uptake/near-uptake been anticipated), and nowhere more colourful than in this extraordinarily orchestrated donnybrook between Citizen Bragg's Yellow Wedge and Ollie "Everything You Hated About Thatcherism, But Were Afraid To Ask" Letwin... |
