Labour narrowly averted disaster in the 1999 Assembly election when they squeaked past Plaid Cymru in this traditional stronghold. When the Government of the UK is at stake Labour should be OK, but they can't be complacent, and will need to make sure they get Labour people to the polls, and stress the importance of having a voice in Government rather than an isolated Nationalist whingeing for Wales on the opposition backbenches. Kim Howells could be one to watch in the next Parliament - he's currently only a junior minister for Consumer Affairs but is articulate and intelligent. His big mouth could get him into trouble though. He recently described the Royal Family as a 'bit bonkers' (OK, it might be true but you really shouldn't say that sort of thing when you're a Minister of the Crown!) |
