Alice Mahon is an irredeemable hard-leftist, which doesn't go down particularly well in a fairly marginal town like this one. Although Labour have held this one since 1987, they were beaten in the 1999 Euros, and won only one ward on Calderdale Council (which also covers Calder Valley) in 2000. This was one of the very few Labour-held seats John Major bothered to visit in the 97 campaign. A close fight could be on the cards. |
