It seemed like the end of an era when in 1987 Labour lost this traditional East End fiefdom which had once been represented by Clement Attlee. In actual fact it was more of a protest vote against the local Labour council which whacked up local taxes just weeks before the general election, and the Labour Party in London, which had come - not without justification - to be seen as dominated by the loony left. Labour clawed it back in 1992 though and this stayed with Labour since. Should be safe.
