The Conservative Party took 35 out of 55 seats (gain of 6) to retain control of Somerset County Council with an increased majority, despite a high-profile defeat for council leader John Osman to former Liberal Democrat MP Tessa Munt by 95 votes. Lib Dem retained 12 seats (loss of 6), UKIP lost all three, Green gained 2, while Labour retained its three seats.
The local election result generally bolds well for the Conservatives in June. While Lib Dems will no doubt put in effort to regain this seat, the gap is likely too large, and they will likely focus their effort in Wells and Yeovil. The Conservatives should have no difficulty retaining this seat. |
