In the local elections, the Tories picked up 31 seats (a gain of 7, only 3 short of the 34 needed for a majority) while labour lost 8 seats to 23. Lib Dems lost 6 of its 7 seats. The collapse of the UKIP vote has undoubtedly helped the Tories.. The results generally bold well for the Conservative, not that Ken Clarke was ever in any danger. |

Former Chancellor and thrice leadership contender Ken Clarke was expected to retire at the next election. However, with an earlier than expected election, the father of the house has opted to stand again in Rushclieffe for the 13th time. With him in the contest, the result is not in doubt. |
