Despite Shaun Woodward's defection to Labour, local, European and past general election results suggest that David Cameron shouldn't have too much trouble winning this seat back for the Tories.

If Woodward was in a quixotic state of mind, he could have looked with hope at Labour's reasonably solid (if still--unlike neighbouring Banbury--not within technical marginality) 2nd place finish here in 1997. That certainly would have spared the kind folk of St. Helens some peace of mind...
