The capital of 'Sun Country' (highest Sun readership in Britain), and home of Essex Man, will stay Labour. Angela Smith's 13500 majority is larger than several long-established Labour seats. BBC2's Newsnight programme visited swing voters in Basildon during the party conference season, and found no movement back towards the Tories except for a lone refugee from the Referendum Party. |

Dick Duane (Socialist Alliance) is also standing and the Lib Dem candidate in 97 was eventually Lindsay Granshaw, not Terry Marsh who withdrew amid news reports which disappeared after the election. |
