A traditional Labour stronghold - Labour even managed to hold it in a byelection in 1976 when the then Labour Government was at a very low ebb. However, like the East End of London, from where many of its residents originally come, it swung heavily to the Tories and away from a hard-left dominated Labour party in the eighties. Tim Jarman, a right-wing Thatcherite, won it for the Tories in 1987. He was however turfed out after one term, by Labour's Andrew Mackinlay. Mackinlay is a fully fledged maverick and member of the awkward squad who's popular with the media and his constituents, but less so with his colleagues - he came a very poor third in the ballot for Chairman of the PLP (Labour's parliamentary caucus). At any rate, normal service has been resumed here in South Essex and the 18000 Labour majority is rock solid. |
