A nice story went around in April that Ian Paisley was planning to challenge David Trimble directly in his own seat, just as he did Terence O'Neill over thirty years ago. However this story was denied by the DUP, and it seems their candidate will be the rather unknown David Simpson. The DUP claim that private opinion polls show their candidate ahead; well, yes, I've done that sort of poll too. The fact that the SDLP have rotated Brid Rodgers into West Tyrone, and that Alliance has withdrawn, must reinforce Trimble's vote as well.

Call me mad - but I think that Trimble will lose this seat. A swing from UUP to DUP and a consolidation of the nationalist vote may give it to SDLP. If Brid Rodgers had stayed here it would have given them a better chance. Whatever the result I thibnk it will be close. I actually think that the Alliance vote could be of great use to Trimble but that depends on how they view his stance on decommisioning

There is as much chance of the SDLP winning this seat as there would be of Ian Paisley getting elected in West Belfast
