Of all the Labour seats gained from the Tories in 1997, this one gave Labour the biggest majority - over 14,000. It seems unlikely that the Tories are strong enough to win this back at this election, and the long-term demographics of this seat are against. Ironically the previous Tory incumbent was their only Asian MP, but the large Labour-voting Asian community here did not save him. |
