This time there is no David Mellor, no Sir James Goldsmith, no "Trevor the Toe" and most likely no fun either! Q. Will the Conservatives do better or worse without the controversial Mellor? I will stick my neck out and say that he was more of a boost than a drawback for the Tory vote here, but it cannot be proved either way. The Conservatives hammered Labour in the twenty-odd wards which comprise this seat in the Wandsworth Borough Council Elections in 1998, but I don't think this is conclusive. Labour would never have won this seat if local election results were a reliable guide. Putney seems the archetypal seat which supported Mrs Thatcher's government and supports the Wandsworth Tory Council, but which now supports "New Labour" in national elections. Highly pragmatic, rather than ideological. Seats with rural elements will swing back to the Tories, but suburban ones should not unless the national opinion polls are badly wrong. Colman has been a stolid enough Member. I believe he will hold the seat.
