Labour came within 582 votes of new Tory candidate Caroline Spelman last time, but having missed their best chance they are unlikely to take Meriden. The Tories led by fully 38 points in the constituency in last year's elections for the local Solihull Borough Council, and ousted a Labour-LibDem-Independent coalition. Spelman has made something of an impact at Westminster, being promoted to the front bench in her first term, and sponsoring a Private Members' Bill on adoption. |
