Fiona Jones has failed to make much of an impact in the Commons since 1997 but she hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons two years ago. Her third placed LibDem opponent accused her of spending above the legal limit on her campaign (facing a shortage of activists, who had all been sent to key target constituencies elsewhere in the region, her agent hired a team of professional telephonists to canvass every voter over the phone) She and her agent were subsequently convicted of election expenses fraud, and she was disqualified from the Commons. However, she successfully appealed and got to keep her seat. Labour did badly in the local elections in 1999, hit by the Fiona Jones affair and also by splits in the local party, with several leftwing rebels elected to the council as independents. If the opinion polls are right then Labour should hold Newark. Nevertheless the whole business may have left a bitter taste in many people's mouths and if the Tories gain any seat in Nottinghamshire it will probably be this one.
