The Tories had high hopes of a win here in the byelection which was caused by the retirement of Speaker Betty Boothroyd and came just two months after the September fuel blockades. William Hague made several visits to the constituency but Labour won fairly comfortably with 51%, albeit on a turnout of not much more than a quarter of the electorate. Local stalwart Adrian Bailey will win again. |
