The town of Jarrow has an enormous and powerful symbolism for the Labour movement. It was the starting point for the famous Jarrow march of the 1930s, when thousands of unemployed men marched all the way to London at the height of the depression to plead for help for this industrial town. Loyalty to Labour runs very deep for Labour; if they can't win here they can't win anywhere. |
