This is one of the top ten safe Labour seats and will return Stephen Byers without fuss. Trade and Industry Secretary Byers is seen by some as representing the essence of new Labour - a 1980s left-winger who became a pro-business technocrat and all round 'safe pair of hands'. He's part of the large North-Eastern contingent in the Cabinet (the PM, Alan Milburn, Byers, Nick Brown, Mo Mowlam). He can expect a good few more years in Cabinet without ever having to worry about his seat here. |
