A traditional Labour heartland just over the Mersey from Liverpool which should return independent minded and intellectual former Welfare Reform Minister Frank Field with a thumping majority for his sixth term. Town has been Labour ever since the War. Possible loss of 1600 jobs at Cammell Laird shipyard in the town could lead to big protest vote or stay-at-home by Labour voters though.

If Frank Field holding the seat can be called any sort of Labour victory, then Labour it is in Birkenhead.
