pretty much the same as for St Helens South, although there are slightly more Tory votes thanks to the presence of the largely rural ward of Rainford, the base of three of the Borough Council's four Conservative members. Former council leader Dave Watts was selected here at the last minute in 1997 - the rumour was that veteran MP and party insider John Evans had left his retirement announcement to the last minute as a favour to Watts, in order to prevent party HQ from insisting on an all-woman shortlist of prospective candidates. Don't expect any excitement in this election. |

With 64% of the vote for Labour in 1997, I can't see how Tories will be able to win in this riding. For sure: Labour. |
