Martin Bell is a fool to stand in Brentwood. His personal popularity could have given him another term here, even in a normal party political contest. However, in the absence of the man in the white suit and "Mr Brown Envelopes" Neil Hamilton, Tory apparatchik George Osborne will cruise to victory in what is a very rich and very Tory area.

Tatton was the 5th safest Conservative seat in the nation before the 1997 election, and I submit Hamilton would have been re-elected even then had Labour and the LibDems not withdrawn their candidates in favour of Martin Bell. George Osborne is William Hague's speechwriter and this is fertile Conservative territory. Conservative gain.

As they say, this is the only *guaranteed* Tory gain of the election. It's also Posh'n'Becks country, which leads one to wonder if rather than standing in Stretford & Urmston, tabloid model Jordan should have stood *here*, as Martin Bell's de facto successor...;-)
