A traditional Labour stronghold. In 1983 it was the only Labour seat in the city of Bristol, and indeed in the whole of the South West of England. Labour had a close shave in 1987, when veteran Labour MP (and former Government Chief Whip) Michael Cocks was deselected in a factional feud. Cocks, on the right of the party, was replaced by Dawn Primarolo, then a follower of the hard left 'Campaign Group' but now a junior Treasury minister under Gordon Brown. However, Primarolo pushed her majority back up in 1992 and passed completely out of danger last time. |
