Carmarthen has a claim to be the birthplace of Welsh nationalism. Gwynfor Evans won a 1966 byelection here to become the first Welsh nationalist ever elected to Parliament. He lost in 1979 (one of the very few Labour gains that year) and Labour have held the seat by a series of small majorities ever since. However Plaid Cymru won here in the National Assembly elections and given that Labour only managed a 3500 majority in a seat they already held when they were sweeping the country this could well become Plaid's fifth Westminster seat. |
