A very large, sprawling rural seat containing much rugged countryside and the picturesque tourist town of Llangollen. Nevertheless, like Wales as a whole it leans to the left. The Tories won it in 1983 when Labour MP Tom Ellis joined the SDP and split the anti-conservative vote, but Martyn Jones won it in 1987 and has held it since. Jones is a low profile MP but is said to have a good reputation for constituency work - the Daily Telegraph columnist Boris Johnson ran for the Tories here last time and said so in the campaign diary he wrote for the paper.
