Very difficult to call. This was held 1970-97 by the popular welsh speaking Tory minister Sir Wyn Roberts, who retired last time. The LibDems ran him very close - less than a thousand votes - on several occasions and were poised to benefit from the Tory collapse, but Labour ran a big local campaign and came through from third place to victory. Then in the 1999 Assembly race something incredible happened. The LDs and Tories faded away, and Plaid Cymru's vote rose from 7% to 33%, and they squeaked past Labour to win by just under a hundred votes. The PC vote is unlikely to be replicated in a General Election (they benefitted from the low turnout, with nationalist-inclined people more likely to vote in an Assembly election because of support for self government). The south end of the seat is rural and welsh speaking, the north contains the seaside town of Llandudno. The North Wales coast is sometimes mocked as the Costa Geriatrica - large numbers of Liverpool people retire here. The idea such people might be represented by a Welsh nationalist is amazing. My guess is Betty Williams will win with about 30% of the vote in the face of a split opposition. |

What was a 3-way marginal may even now be a 4-way marginal, though I very much doubt whether the latest Party to become involved here - Plaid Cymru - could ever take the seat in a General Election. It seems to me that Labour have such a small majority in Conwy that they will almost certainly lose it. The contest then is really between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. I think the Conservatives might just scrape through, especially if disillusioned Labour voters switch to Plaid more so than to the Lib Dems. |
