Plaid Cymru's vote may be hit by the decision of fourteen-year incumbent and new party leader Ieuan Wyn Jones to stand down from his Westminster seat so he can lead his party in the National Assembly. However, it's not clear where a challenge would come from here on the isle of Anglesey. The Tories held the seat for eight years before Jones but both their victories, in 1979 and 1983, came at times when their party was riding the crest of an electoral wave. Labour held the seat for thirty four years before then with Welsh Secretary Cledwyn Hughes, but foot-and-mouth, and high fuel prices, will hurt them in a seat dominated by agriculture and tourism.

In a place as exotic as Anglesey, one can mistakenly assume that anyone other than Plaid Cymru doesn't stand a Llanfair PG of a chance; but perhaps because of the sedately touristic underlay, that's been anything but the case. Still, this should hold, if only because general momentum's been in PC's favour...
