The national tide should carry Labour to victory here but expect a stiff challenge from Elizabeth Peacock, who was the Tory MP here from 1983 to 1997. Peacock is a shrill populist who pulled off Houdini acts in 1987 and 1992 and kept the Labour swing well below the national average in 1997. |
