With a massive 20,000 majority, it would be a bit of a shock if David Blunkett didn't hold Sheffield Brightside. However it will be interesting to see what happens to the Lib Dems and the Tories. The Tories were not in a particularly strong position in 1992 and slipped into third place in 1997. Since then, things have not really picked up for them at local elections. The Lib Dems, meanwhile, have been pretty successful, winning control of Sheffield Ciy Council, and it will be interesting to see whether they manage to consolidate their good second-placing last time (their vote actually held up here pretty well in 1997 - fairly rare in an inner city seat where they didn't do that badly in 1992). |
