Nick Griffin will run Labour close here and get a comfortable second place. The stupid comment made by Gordon Brown about the lady in Rochdale being a bigot, despite the apology will not help Labour's cause here.

The BNP leader is running here, and I hate to say it, but he might finish a strong second. I think voters are smart enough to know that Labour is the only party that can beat them. This constituency may be the only one in the country to see Labour gain votes.

White working class voters in East London swung to the Tories in the eighties, but even then Labour held on here. Barking passed out of the danger zone in the 1994 byelection which Labour won with 77% of the vote.
