Liberals will keep this seat, most of the new riding was held by two popular retiring MPP's.

One of the two best Liberal ridings in Ontario, and probably the safest; even a spotty cabinet stint and Patti Starr couldn't stop Bernard Grandmaitre from a 60%+ vote in 1990. Curiously, while Ottawa-Vanier includes the ferociously upscale enclave of Rockcliffe Park, an otherwise downscale/yupscale demographic and the reverberations of Ottawa Centre's civil-service unions means NDP might be the real sleeper here, particularly in Sandy Hill/Lower Town, New Edinburgh and Manor Park. (They're running the '97 federal candidate, who did well under the circumstances.) But the presence of the city of Vanier probably spells the kiss of doom for anybody who isn't Liberal. Especially Liberal and Franco-Ontarian. With the party leader next door, yet.

Maurice Lamirand has a good chance to win in this riding. He has strong community ties, and his party's policies are very popular here. This will not be an easy ride for Ms. Boyer. On June 4th, she will be congratulating Maurice on his win.

How Liberal? The rumours are that some people are working on the Liberal campaign so they can call in favours from the MPP later, despite the fact they plan to vote for somebody else. That Liberal.

I think Claudette might be in a tighter race than she thought. The NDP is doing very well in Sandy Hill and Lowertown while the P.C's are favoured by the riding redistribution (Rockcliffe, Manor Park, and Gloucester are now part of the riding). Also Lamirande (his name has an "e" at the end) is well liked in the riding and has run a very good campaign.

Safest Liberal seat in the province. Federally, it's the safest Liberal seat in the country
