Bachand would ahve kept his seat if he was running. However since there there is no incumbant then this is just one of many many former possible Liberal pick-ups that will fall to the Bloc. Look for a Federalist party winning this riding in the next election...till then, BQ win.

I'm not sure why this riding is undecided, or who it's narrowed down to. The Liberals received 21% last time. And while they'll gain as a result of Bachand no longer being around, the Bloc need only get into the 40s, which they should easily do given their sharp rise in the polls.

Oubliez toute victoire conservatrice ici.

While I dont speak french, from the shouting I do understand the words backbencher, and an importnat minister.
a few things on that
first of all, the CPC is probably (according to me anyways) not going to win the election, and therefore, there wont be any ministers.
Even if they were going to win, the CPC (and NDP) are just not popular in Quebec, and yes, people would prefer a Bloc/Liberal backbencher to a CPC/NDP minister.
Lastly, most people here are just predicting this riding blue because it went blue in 2000. That was because of Bachand. Need I remind you that 5 MP's were elected from Quebec in 1997 for the PC Party? 3 of them went to the Liberals, and were all re-elected. Charest is now Preimier, and Bachand, while re-elected in 2000, is not running again. If Bachand was running, I'd say he would win. Running in the leadership campaign was what he needed to win. But now that he's not running, this riding will vote on party lines, and that means the CPC does not have a hope here. Bloc win, end of story.

Bachand's victory does not mean a victory for the PC Party, nor, the CPC. It was a personal-populairty thing, and really, a fluke. He was lucky to hold on to his riding. the Bloc will easily take it this time around.

Anybody who extrapolates *any* Tory victory in Quebec based on Richmond-Arthabaska is out to lunch; you should be using provincial ADQ results as a matrix, *not* Andre Bachand, whose 2000 PC victory here is of as little consequence as Jean Charest was to Sherbrooke after he resigned for the provincial Liberal leadership. In Stephen Harper's ideal 45-seat Quebec scenario, yes, this is winnable--it edges onto ADQ heartland--but Bachand's not to blame for this. However, it's not *that* dead-certain BQ either in face of the Bachand breach; there are distinct federalist pockets, and it was the rare rural-Quebec seat to defy Mulroneymania and stick to the Liberals in '84 (though it belatedly relented in '88). In the 2000 dynamic, were Bachand not running, it could easily have been a Grit pickup like Frontenac next door. Of course, post-sponsorship scandal, that'd make it look just as ripe for the Bloc takeback picking today. But the Tories? At best, but a spoiler now.

Again, I have to strongly agree on the fact that there is no way the Conservative Party could do anything in this riding. Any submission supporting to CP should not be treated seriously. The PC Party won this sit of the Andre Bahand's popularity, he is a very centrist polititian that was able to reach out to both federalist and separatist crowd. The new PC has not even picked up a candidate yet. As previous poster wrote, Harper and co. are disliked in Quebec and most of their policy is a laughing stock in this province. Given the actual circumstances this riding should go to Bloc () Adscam and unpopular PLQ gov't ), but that is hardly a typical separatist area either, should go Bloc but Grits could win too, if they enter a good candidate.

Not to belittle someone else's prediction but this is NOT going to go to the Conservatives! To Quebecers the new Conservative party looks like the Candian Alliance (Read: anti-french, right-wing extremists). Why do you think Bachand quit the party? It will take nothing short of divine intervention for a Harper-lead Conservative party to win any seats in Quebec. Bachand was elected in 97 due to the Charest effect (the eastern townships voted ina number of PC MPs due to Charest's popularity at the time). In 2000 when Charest was gone, Bachand was elected due to his personal popularity, not the party he ran for (this is a common theme in many Quebec ridings). Bachand is gone, the old PC party is gone and the new Conservatives have as much chance of winning here as the BQ do in West Island Montreal. This is clearly a Liberal-BQ race and as of now the BQ are definitly ahead.

I feel the Cpc may cling by 1-3% if the Conservatives break 15% in Quebec. The ridings swing in Quebec heavily. So if it is a slim minority for the Liberals or a CPC win it will stay blue.

The Liberal again screw things up at the nomination level and have just made this seat an easy pick up for the Bloc....

With PC MP Bachaund not running again, I think this riding will fall to the Bloc. The Tories won by less than 500 votes in 2000. Moreover, the Bloc is polling at higher levels than they did in 2000. Those who voted for Bachaund in 2000 likely won't turn to the new Conservatives. Those voters represented the last gasp of Mulroney's old Quebec nationalist support. They would be more likely to go Bloc rather than Conservative or Liberal. The Liberals will have to court those old PC votes from 2000 if they are to have any hope of winning. The numbers are against the Liberals, though, and I feel the Bloc will soundly defeat them.
